The 7Up Series
In 1964 Granada Television's World in Action team set out to test the theory - are children's lives already mapped out for them at the tender age of seven? Are their futures determined by their upbringing and what can they really tell us about the environment in which they are growing up? This was the start of a remarkable series which returns every seven years to document the group. Directed by Michael Apted. ©Granada Media

Frankfurt The Euro City Frankfurt is the hub of the new German economy and a global financial centre. The Global Nomad - China Volume 1 Episode 1 An overview of modern China. Presenter Manchán Magan travels from the Great Wall to Beijing and then south to Qu'fu, the birthplace of Confucian philosophy, the bedrock of Chinese culture and perspective. Further south is the town of Ta'an, an ancient Buddhist monastery in Shaolin, and to the west, the mighty Yangtse River. Episode 2 The Great Dam being built half way up the river Yangtse, is the most monumental, infrastructure project ever undertaken by humankind. This program explores the Dam's potential effects for the people along the banks of the River, some of China's peasant population who, numbering 1 billion people, are the single largest disenfranchised people on earth. The Global Nomad - China Volume 2 Episode 4 North west from Yunnan is the Xinjiang Province. Although its capital, Urumqi is 3000 miles from Beijing, the clocks here remain set to Beijing time. China desperately needs to control this harsh region and is migrating millions of people out there to colonise the under populated Gobi Desert. But Xinjiang is quite distinct from modern China, closer to Afghanistan than Shanghai, the people mostly Muslim Kazaks and Uighers. It is both one of the hottest and coldest regions on the planet. Episode 5 Taiwan -is it truly another culture and country or simply a small local province of China? Despite having no real international standing, Taiwan is the 18th wealthiest economy in the world with an extraordinary history. Travelling through the island, Margan discovers an extraordinary element of Taiwan's history. Thousands of years ago it was colonised by Polynesian people whose ancestors still live in underground typhoon proof dwellings and sing the songs of their culture. Episode 6 As China reaches out to the rest of the world, it faces an internal struggle between the traditional forces attempting to sustain China's ancient culture and the ever increasing capitalist tendencies of the new Chinese generation. It is an almost impossible challenge in the face of an ever-liberating economy and fresh engagement with the world. The Global Nomad - Turkey Turkey has always existed as a bridge between the west and the east and today that pressure is greater than ever as it courts the favour of the European Union. Magan travels overland from Istanbul, once the capital of the Byzantine Empire, visiting the troglodyte churches and cities where the early Christians hid first from the Roman Empire and then from Islam. Then onto Adana, Turkey's largest contemporary mosque and to the western edges of ancient Mesopotamia, Turkey's fertile farming region, where nomadic Kurds work for a few dollars a week harvesting the crops. Antakya, ancient Antioch, the church where Saint Peter is reputed to have said the first mass, is a timely reminder that the Middle East was the birthplace of Christianity. Judaism and Islam were also founded in this region and today the tensions between the three great monotheistic regions remain evident. DVD Format $55.00 BYD101 |

The Global Nomad - Syria At first glance the Arab world seems at odds with our western culture. It is difficult to come to terms with the male dominated society where women exist as second class citizens and where the order of each day is controlled by the call to prayer. But Syria is a beautiful land inhabited by friendly people always ready to embrace the visitor with an open heart. Magan travels to Hama, a modern town built on the graves of 25,000 people who were massacred by the Assad regime after an attempted revolt in 1972. Crac de Chevaliers, one of the best preserved Crusader fortresses stands as a reminder of the many 1000s of Arabs slaughtered by the Crusaders in the name of God. An Islamic sheikh explains some of the similarities between Islam and Christianity. Far out in the desert stands one of best preserved remains of the classical world, Palmyra and to the south, one of the few remaining Christian towns in the region is enjoying a Pentecostal parade. The Global Nomad - Beirut to Bethlehem Beirut, South Lebanon, The Golan Heights, Palestine - these names will resound forever with the tragedies of the past four decades. Symbolically Beirut is undergoing a massive redevelopment that in time will plaster over the cracks of civil war. Just a short journey to the north, is the birthplace of Kahlil Kibrain, poet and writer of the great romantic tome, The Prophet. In a Palestinian refugee camp near the town of Tyre where Jonah was spat from the belly of the whale, the great challenge facing the region is clear - three generations of displaced people live in dire economic circumstances. Confined to the camps, they have very little opportunity to build new lives. In South Lebanon, presenter Magan visits a town hit by an Israeli phosphorous bomb killing 120 people, the Golan Heights where villages and cities have been reduced to ghost towns and then onto Israel and Palestine and the film's final destination Bethlehem. DVD Format $55.00 BYD103 |

The Global Nomad - Israel Compared to the rest of the region Israel is something of a miracle. They have made the land fertile through hard work and irrigation. Magan visits one of the earliest kibbutzes and talks with one of its founders. In Tel Aviv the country's youth enjoy a lifestyle at odds with the principles of orthodox Jews. Israel is a country of stark contrasts, with an immense national pride that suggests an accommodation with their Arab neighbours will be difficult to achieve. In Masada at dawn, the warrior's cry that the town will never fall rings as true today as it did two millennia ago. On Yom Kippur the country comes to a halt as the nation remembers its past. DVD Format $55.00 BYD104 |

The Global Nomad - Jordan Long before Jew, Christian or Muslim arrived in the Middle East the nomadic Bedouin roamed the deserts and remain there today. Jordan is home to millions of Bedouin although the majority have migrated to the cities leaving their nomadic life behind them. Presenter Manchán Magan travels south through Jordan exploring the arid landscape of the Bedouin people. The Rift Valley stretches as far as Ethiopia - the primary migration root of our earliest ancestors. In Wadi Rum, Margan spends a few days with a Bedouin family where the modern pressures on nomadic life are becoming difficult to resist. The camel is being replaced by the 4x4 pickup and the Bedouin children are attending school where they learn English with pride. It remains to be seen whether this unique way of life will be sustainable over coming decades. DVD Format $55.00 BYD105 |

The Global Nomad - Egypt In the final program, Margan retraces Moses' footsteps across the Red Sea to the Sinai Desert where one of Christianity's oldest and most impressive monastries. Saint Catherine's Monastery has remained intact and un-violated since it was founded in the 4th Century AD. Behind it rises Mount Sinai where Moses found the Ten Commandments. Arriving in Cairo is a culture shock - a city of millions of people, countless religions, cultures and architectural styles. Deep in the heart of the city is the City of the Dead, a massive 400-year-old graveyard that has become home to thousands of people forced to find a home there because of the overcrowding of the city. Following the Nile, historically a primary source of life, Margan visits the great pyramids at Giza. At the Burqash Camel market, camel traders have marched their animals to Egypt from the Sudan and Ethiopia, following a well-worn track that has existed since humanity first wandered out of Africa. INSIDE THE TALIBAN For centuries, Afghans have resisted and endured occupying armies, from the Greek armies of Alexander the Great, to Genghis Khan’s Mongols. More recently the Russians and now America and its allies. After expelling the occupying Russian army, the Taliban took control of government under the direction of the charismatic Mullah Mohammad Omah. Promising to remake Afghanistan into a peaceful Islamic utopia, the Taliban instead presided over one of the darkest periods in Afghanistan’s bleak history. All but ignored by America until the fateful attacks of 9-11, the Taliban were the first casualty of the War on Terror. They were swept from power and left for dead, but today the Taliban are back and now threaten to plunge the whole region into chaos again. (96 minutes) Produced and directed by David Keane.
